What a captivating wine! While nothing coming out of the Pivnica Čajkov cellars could be called ordinary this is something else. Admittedly, I passed over this cuvee the first few times we ordered wine from Marek and Mirka. But last time Marek pestered me about it... "why aren't you trying Tecton, you'll love it"... so he sent me along a sample to try with a previous load and BOOM! Instantly captivated. I was SO wrong skipping it. It's really special. So what is it?
It's a blend of red and white grapes (Alibernet, Frankovka and Devin - a relative of Traminer).
Dark fruited, very ripe cherry and a bit of rose on the nose (oops :). But then the taste is quite light, juicy and fresh. A bit of dark chocolate mingles with some light spice and those dark fruits. A hint of citrus carries it and adds freshness too. Would go GREAT with middle eastern dishes. Can effortlessly sit along side the mingling of sweet/sour and charred meats etc.
Some notes about the maker:
Meet Pivnica Čajkov. A small craft winery located at the foot of the Štiavnica Mountains and the remains of the Sitno volcano in the village of Čajkov, within the Nitra wine region.
Marek now leads the Uhnák family winery after generations of toil and is harnessing local varieties such as Pesecká Leánka and Feteasca Alba - varieties that are increasingly disappearing in favour of more convenient and popular international varieties. Despite the challenges Marek believes that his local gems are particularly suitable for the local climate/conditions and is passionate about sharing them the world.
