The Irish wheat used in Boatyard’s vodka is carefully sourced from what are considered to be the finest growers in Ireland. Following a seed-to-sip ethos, each bottle can be traced back to the specific farmer and even the exact field where the wheat was cultivated. This approach ensures that the small-batch Irish vodka delivers a distinctive and complex flavor. Unlike many, Boatyard chooses not to filter its spirit, allowing the natural character of the Irish grain to shine through—pure, unaltered, and enjoyed as intended.
Introduction
The Boatyard Distillery is located on the banks of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, North West Ireland. It holds the distinction of being Fermanagh’s first legal distillery since 1890. The distillery’s journey began in 2013 when its founder, Joe McGirr, envisioned returning to his native Enniskillen to bring his dream to life. Having grown up on a nearby dairy farm, McGirr ensured that his family remained an integral part of the distillery’s identity. The distillery takes its name from the disused boatyard on which it was built, offering a unique setting where visitors can arrive just as easily by boat as by car.
In late 2016, The Boatyard Distillery sold its first bottle at a local festival, marking a significant milestone in McGirr’s vision. His dedication to a "liquid-first" approach quickly led to early success, with the first bar outside of Ireland to stock Boatyard being The American Bar at The Savoy, which was recognized at the time as the World’s Best Bar. Led by Declan McGurk, the bar selected Boatyard Gin after a blind tasting, with McGurk later discovering its connection to his family’s roots. After establishing himself at one of the world’s leading bars, McGurk went on to join Boatyard as its Commercial Director.
From the initial goal of crafting a gin perfect for Martinis, with a double hit of juniper to enhance its presence in a G&T, Boatyard has evolved into a brand that attracts top industry professionals dedicated to its growth. Now featured in some of the world’s finest bars, this recognition has expanded Boatyard’s availability on retail shelves globally. The distillery aims to become Ireland’s leading gin producer, focused on crafting sustainable spirits while providing its team with an inspiring journey. This commitment to excellence and sustainability was further solidified in February 2023 when Boatyard became the first B Corp-certified distillery in Ireland.
