One of the most celebrated Hungarian white varieties. The backbone of the world famous Tokaj region.
Low yields, careful hand-harvesting and plenty of time in large neutral Hungarian oak. Keys to make such a clear and lineal expression of this charming grape and terroir.
Light golden, sea-shell. Pear and spice. And, of course, the famous mineral driven length of Somlo.
Fekete Pince Somló is located on the southern slope of Somlo Hill, in an old volcanic formation in western Hungary. The small wine area has a large reputation for its mineral driven white wines. For approximately 1000 years now the terroir has been recognised for its elegance and power.
The winery was started by famed local Mr Bela Fekete, the 'Grand Old Man of Somlo' in the 1970's and extended it step-by-step to 3.3 hectares. It now covers a mighty 4.3 ha and is now in the custodianship by new owners Gábor and Zsófi Riesz since 2014. They continue with hand harvesting, traditional vinification and following fermentation with plenty of time for the wine to mature, generally 3-4 years at least. Time that is crucial for evolution of the wine and the taming of the terroir. They also maintain a close relationship with Uncle Bela, drawing on his decades of experience.
They produce local speciality Juhfark along side Hungarian legends Hárslevelű, Furmint and regional staple Olaszrizling (Welchriesling/Graševina) among a few others.
